Good Bye, Welcome Week(s)… Hello Fall Semester! (August Update)
Hello, everyone! I survived August! I’m only kidding… I love August and all the things it comes with, but it is a pretty tiring few weeks. Nevertheless, I’m here to update you on how it all went!
Love you guys, and thank you for all the support!!
Weeks of Welcome!
At UTD, the Freshman move into dorms the week before school starts. So, that is what we consider the start of, “Weeks of Welcome” for the students. We played board games near the Residence Halls each night according to which ones were scheduled for move-in. We met TONS of students doing this! UTD is a big commuter school, but I met students from Ohio, Virginia, Florida, California… all over! They come knowing NO ONE… maybe interacting with their assigned roommates via social media… but that’s it. So we seek to be a welcoming presence of new friends for them as they embark on this big, independent journey of college. It was so fun (although very hot!)
We then played some “Zombie Tag” which is tag except you’re being tagged by zombies (fake, of course). If you get tagged, you become a zombie! The goal is to survive the apocalypse without being tagged. We pretty much take over one of the classroom buildings and use all 4 floors to play. It’s a blast, and draws a lot of people in out of curiosity!
We did a Field Night with lots of lawn / outdoor games! Even despite 105 degree heat, we had a pretty good turn out!
We hosted “Everything’s Bigger in Texas” where we had giant inflatable human foosball, giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, volleyball with a huge beachball, and even country line dancing!
We had a few ethnic events where we celebrated Black, Asian, and Latin culture! We had GREAT turnouts for those events, it was really neat.
Then to cap it all off, we had our FNF KICKOFF!!
FNF (Or Friday Night Fellowship) is our weekly gathering of corporate worship. We have worship, a teaching time, announcements, and events afterwards to socialize and bond as the greater community! We had about 190 students at our kickoff. It went great!
I was so encouraged by all the students that God has brought us. It really is so encouraging to see all the hard work of the two weeks pay off as we see the same students at events and our big FNF Kickoff!
Please pray for continued stamina as we now head in to our traditional Fall semester schedule!
Here are some pics and videos from the last couple weeks!
